First Hamburg Ambassador Appointed

 

Friday, June 11, 2005 – Ole von Beust, Mayor of Hamburg, has named Sven C. Oehme as the first “Hamburg Ambassador.”  Mr. Oehme was presented with a certificate, confirming his appointment as honorary ambassador and will now be responsible for promoting the Hanseatic City of Hamburg in the U.S.

 
The concept behind the “Hamburg Ambassador Program” is for individuals who possess a prominent personal affiliation with the city of Hamburg, whether it be by birth, study, or a long term professional relationship, to be presented with the unique honor of representing and promoting Hamburg’s reputation as a thriving city. The Ambassador will represent Hamburg in social and business settings and at events around the world.

Sven C. Oehme was born in Hamburg and is closely affiliated with the Hanseatic City, having studied law and economics at the University of Hamburg. Following his studies, Mr. Oehme worked in executive positions for subsidiaries of Gruner & Jahr, the Bertelsmann publishing house, until 1991.  From 1992 to 1997, he served as managing director of the European-American Chamber of Commerce in the United States, Inc. (EACC) and also as Vice President of the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. with special responsibilities for the chamber’s legal department.

In 1998, Mr. Oehme founded the European-American Business Organization, Inc., of which he is the president.  He is also president and CEO of the American Business Forum on Europe, Inc., which he founded in 2002, president of the German American Law Association, and director of the “American Foreign Law Association. In addition, Mr. Oehme is also the U.S. Director of The Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius ZEIT Foundation in New York and a fellow of the Foreign Policy Association.
